What’s Better: Remanufactured Or Genuine Ink/ Toner Cartridges?

February 13th, 2012 No comments

Understanding The Difference Is The Key!
To know which is better for your particular needs begins with understanding the differences. Each type of cartridges has it’s pros and cons. Understanding these options will help you make an informed decision based upon your personal or business needs.

Genuine/ OEM Ink/ Toner Cartridges
These are brand new cartridges straight from the factory of the original maker of your printer such as HP, Brother, Canon and Lexmark. These come with a warranty from the original manufacturer and will deliver prints concurrent with the original OEM specifications.

Remanufactured Ink/ Toner Cartridges
These cartridges are used cartridges that have been collected and sent to a remanufacturer that is not the original maker. Unlike many retailers, we use only 1 time used or “virgin” cores for all of our products. Our remanufacturing process includes the following steps:

  1. Carefully open up the cartridge and ensure no damage is done.
  2. Thorough cleaning of the inside of the cartridge.
  3. Inspection of all critical and non-critical parts.
  4. Replacement of any and all parts that fail quality control.
  5. Precision color matching of a compatible ink or toner. (OEM ink/ toner is patented)
  6. Advanced filling and re-sealing techniques to ensure freshness.

True Compatible Ink/ Toner Cartridges
These cartridges are what we call “new mold” or cartridges that are newly made by a manufacturer other than the original maker. Although there are some non-patented cartridges the vast majority of them are under patent. Many cartridges on the market, especially the extremely cheap ones are illegal “new mold” cartridges. Express-Inks absolutely does not sell illegal cartridges and any “new mold” cartridges we do offer are on non-patented cartridges.

So Which Is Truly Better? Pros And Cons, Quality Vs. Cost
To decide which is right for you, here is a list of pros and cons of each type of cartridge. Depending on what type of printing you are doing will be the biggest factor in what will work best. In many circumstances the cost may override the quality since the quality is negligible or unnoticeable for many users.

Remanufactured/ Compatible Cartridges
  1. Pros:
    • Pricing, save up to 90% compared to OEM.
    • Price increase are rare and typically prices decrease rather then increase.
    • Certain models print better, lasts longer or have additional options (jumbo size).
    • MICR toners available in models not offered by the original manufacturer.
    • Can be available long after the OEM manufacturer stops making a cartridge.

  2. Cons:
    • Higher defect rate compared to OEM. Sometimes cartridges are not recognized by the printer, may leak or produce smudgy prints.
    • Colors may by slightly off. Good compatibles should be virtually unnoticeable.

Genuine/OEM Cartridges
  1. Pros:
    • Low defect rate and printer chip errors, leaks virtually never happen.
    • Color matching is precise and are exact to OEM specifications.

  2. Cons:
    • Pricing can be double, triple or more.
    • Price increases are much more frequent and can be substantial. Typical about once a year around 3-5% but can be as high as 15-20%.
    • Lack of options like MICR or Higher Yield Jumbo sizes.
    • Sometimes unavailable or constrained due to manufacturer errors, global supplies or other factors (sever weather).
    • Models may be discontinued by the manufacturer, this has been known to happen to models that are only 1-2 years old.

Breaking It Down: Price Comparisons
Lets compare compatible/ remanufactured cartridges to the OEM/ original cartridges. The savings can be massive and should always be a factor in deciding what is best for your needs.

HP #940XL Black Ink C4906AN: Compatible = $15.99 | Genuine HP C4906AN = $36.99
Brother TN350 Toner Cartridge: Compatible = $33.99 | Genuine Brother TN350 = $58.99
HP CE505X (05X) Toner Cartridge: Compatible = $61.99 | Genuine Brother TN350 = $158.99
Lexmark 64015HA Toner Cartridge: Compatible = $136.99 | Genuine 64015HA = $356.99

Lexmark Firmware Update Kills Aftermarket Toners!

March 17th, 2011 No comments

Say No To Lexmark’s Firmware Updates!
Lexmark has released new firmware updates that promise end users improved prints. Many of these consumers choose aftermarket supplies because of the extreme price tags Lexmark has for it’s consumables. Unknowingly consumers have installed the new software that prevents any aftermarket cartridge from working in these printers. The consumer must install all OEM cartridges in order for the printer to print. This firmware upgrade is irreversible according to Lexmark.

Is This Anti-Competitive, Restrictive Trade Practice Legal?
Consumers are crying “Foul” and stated they were unaware that they would no longer have a choice of supplies. Many have gone farther to say they feel duped or tricked. Aftermarket manufacturers say this creates a clear Monopoly and is a clear violation of the law. Lexmark is setting a dangerous precedent not only in the imaging aftermarket but the global aftermarket. What’s next, will you be forced to buy dealership car parts and won’t be able to buy aftermarket (Autozone, NAPA) replacements? With big names like IBM, Katun and Static Control heavily invested in the aftermarket, law suits are sure to follow. We will keep you posted with any developments that happen.

What Can I Do To Prevent This Happening To Me?
Turn off automatic updates for all brands of printers. Many updates do not affect the average consumer. Make sure you read all terms and conditions for any software/ firmware update. Have employees sign employee firmware agreements that require manager approval before updating. Apply warning labels/ stickers to all your printers to not update the firmware without approval.

How Do Laserjet Printers Work?

November 3rd, 2009 No comments

Understanding the basics of a laserjet printer.

To understand how a laserjet printer prints is to understand the basics of electrical charges like static electricity. This is how a laserjet printer makes a powder toner adhere to a piece of paper. The first thing is to understand the opposites attract. This is how magnets work, positive charges are attracted to and stick to negative charges.

To explain this in basic terms:

1. The printer puts a negative charge on the paper.
3. The printer’s laser spreads a negative electrostatic image onto a positively charged drum (reversing the polarity only where the image is)
2. The drum roller with the negatively charged image rolls over the positively charged toner, picking the toner on the image only (opposites attract).
3. The paper is then feed to the fuser unit where hot rollers heat up the paper and press the toner onto the paper. Since the toner is partly made up of plastic, the plastic melts and gets pressed to the paper making it adhere permanently.
4. The finished product is rolled out.
